Behind the project2006.01.01 - Behind the project
Happy new year, and welcome to the first news article on SQL Visualizer.
The SQL Visualizer project is estimated to take about 12-16 months before the first official release becomes available. Each stage of the project will be accompanied by a public beta which you can download and comment on.
The ultimate goal of SQL Visualizer is to provide a tool that can be used in place of, or in conjuntion will, Query Analyser/SQL Enterprise Manager/SQL Server Management Studio. The idea is to provide additional features not available in these tools, such as searching, IntelliSense, data visualization, and quick navigation. Hopefully, these are features that will make using SQL Server easier. Without giving away too many secrets at this point, there are a whole host of features planned, not just for the first official release, but for 3 major versions. Unfortunately in order to get to this stage there is a signigicant overlap with these other tools that has to be put in place first; basic file operations, database object lists, query execution, etc.
The first release is intended to deal with most of these issues, concentrating on the most commonly used object types; tables, views, stored procedures, etc. It is not the intention to duplicate everything in Enterprise Manager as a significant proportion of this functionality may only be used infrequently.
